Anthony Madrid Wonders ‘What Is Poetry For?’

Paris Review Daily has now published two of Anthony Madrid’s quasi-kōan sets, “Both speech and silence are involved in transcendent detachment and subtle wisdom. How can we pass through without error?” (in July) and “I always remember Jiangnan in May; where the partridges call, the hundred flowers are fragrant.” (Right this very second! (ish)) More: Public Case 6: Ancient Chinese Our teacher said: “Has anyone ever noticed that many of the most attractive ancient Chinese poets have the same ideas about poetry as modern American high school students? Anyhow, the themes are the same. What am I doing today. How am I feeling. What’s my philosophy. What can I see from where I’m sitting. What just happened. I am kind of a loser. What are my favorite quotes.” One of the students said: “James Schuyler.” Comment. It is hard for twenty-first-century USA poets to really understand old Chinese poetry: no surprise there. The surprise is that we find our own childhoods as difficult to “relate to” as the literary world of premodern China. We rub our eyes in disbelief when we have anything in common with either. Tao Qian, James Schuyler, our own sixteen-year-old selves—of course they write about what they can see from where they’re sitting. What else can be seen? The truth is almost everyone has almost everything in common. The main exception is the people who are “too smart for that.” They make a point of not having anything in common with anybody. Introduction

What follows is the product of ‘s Hypothes.is Aggregator. Find more info here on how it works and how to install on your WordPress blog.  I annotated a recent Audrey Watters post about the history and hyperbole surrounding Virtual Reality hardware and software.

It’s a bit of a mess on my end at this stage, but what you are seeing is Shaffer’s plug-in gathering all of the annotations with “VRedhype” tags.  If you are like me, when you are working in the margins you don’t take time to tag.  Well…time to unlearn the old and learn the new.  Advice to self: tag this stuff.

The next question is simply, “How do I curate this mess and, inevitably, why bother?  Next, wouldn’t it be fine to get some playful response from the author? Fourth, how do I integrate (or should I even bother) this into  the centrifuge of knowledge that seems to spin ever on and ever faster?  In the spirit of infinite play I can dismiss all of these questions and party on, but as a teacher who wants to share the wealth with my fellow learners…I gotta curate and share.

Virtual simulations promise that learning experiences can be undertaken more safely (and sometimes more cost-effectively).

I recall my most recent introduction to VR was one of the early NYT attempts. This one showed a food drop in Sudan. I really felt something new with that VR video. I felt empathy because I was surrounded (something I could see AND feel around me) by folks who were racing to get at the parachuting food palettes drifting down and landing. The point being that the experience was embodied. For some small percentage of people VR is incredibly embodied--they get very powerful motion sickness.

Conclusion

So what do we do with these tools that improve upon how we seek, make sense of, and share the world around us?

That would be an ideal question to pursue in the comments and the margins.

 

 

Writing Project Tech Pedagogy: Episode Ten (6/21/2016)

I have a few mobile apps that I use because they help me express a feeling or idea in ways that text alone cannot.  One of those apps is Legend.  The app is a way to bring kinetic type to your tweets, Facebook, and blog posts.  It works on Android  and iOS ($1.99)systems.

You might think of it as texting and emoji on the next level.

What Legend does is offer you a choice of animated text and color schemes.  You take it from there.  Here are some recent images I have made.  You make some too and send them in texts and blog posts and tweets and wherever you think you need something with a stronger signal than text alone.  Perfect for quotes, but you can see that uploading your own images is also possible.  Fun. That’s why mobile is so popular with the younglings.

Writing Project Tech Pedagogy: Episode Six (6/16/2016)

 

 

Today, a simple suggestion. Use Twitter for professional development. And use a hashtag for the WKU writing project–#wkuwp.

Twitter is a very easy to use channel to share with others yet it is surprisingly flexible given its 140-character constraints.  You can embed videos, images, animated gifs, links.  You can send direct, private messages (no 140-character limit with those) or you can tweet to a very select group of folks by sharing a hashtag.

Once you get the hang of it then I recommend two ways to make Twitter even more valuable.  First, get a Twitter client like Tweetdeck to manage your tweeting activity.  Below is a short screencast where you can see my Tweetdeck screen.

 

Second, partipate in a tweetchat, an organized gathering of Twitter users that usually lasts an hour and consists of a Q&A over a particular topic.  If you want to see how big this has gotten, then check out this site that gathers together what is available.
